Statement by the Sudanese Alliance for Rights Welcoming the Adoption of the Joint Banjul Declaration on Sudan.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights warmly welcomes the formal adoption of the Joint Banjul Declaration on Sudan on 12 May 2026 during the 87th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul, The Gambia.

We commend the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the United Nations, and the two Fact-Finding Missions for this important and timely declaration, which reflects the urgency of the crisis in Sudan and reaffirms the need for coordinated action to protect civilians, ensure accountability, and support a just and lasting peace.

The declaration’s clear calls for full cooperation with accountability mechanisms, implementation of recommendations by all relevant actors, strengthened international action to prevent further atrocities, and renewed commitment to an inclusive civilian-led political future represent critical steps toward addressing the devastating human rights and humanitarian crisis facing the Sudanese people.

We particularly welcome the emphasis placed on the protection of civilians and human rights defenders, whose work remains indispensable in documenting violations, identifying early warning signs, and preserving the hope for justice under extremely difficult conditions. The recognition of the need to preserve evidence, support survivors, ensure humanitarian access, and advance accountability is essential to ending impunity and restoring dignity to affected communities.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights strongly echoes the declaration’s affirmation that no sustainable resolution to the conflict can be achieved through military means. The future of Sudan must be shaped through an inclusive, civilian-led political process that ensures the meaningful participation of women, youth, civil society actors, and communities across all regions of the country.

We urge all parties to the conflict to immediately cooperate with the Fact-Finding Missions and other accountability mechanisms, cease violations against civilians, and allow unrestricted humanitarian access. We further call upon regional and international actors to intensify coordinated efforts to halt the violence and ensure that those responsible for grave violations are held accountable.

The formal adoption of the Joint Banjul Declaration sends a strong message that the people of Sudan have not been forgotten. It must now be matched by urgent, concrete, and sustained action.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights remains committed to working alongside national, regional, and international partners to advance justice, accountability, civilian protection, and a democratic future for Sudan.
