On November 18, 2024, Russia’s veto of the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan dealt a devastating blow to the millions of civilians trapped in the ongoing conflict. The resolution, authored by the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone, called on all warring parties in Sudan to “immediately cease hostilities” and initiate a dialogue on a “national ceasefire.” It was a critical step toward halting the violence, protecting innocent lives, and facilitating the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid. Russia’s obstruction is a reckless move that prioritizes political interests over the lives of vulnerable Sudanese citizens who are suffering daily.
We strongly condemn Russia’s use of its veto power, which stands in direct opposition to the international community’s responsibility to protect civilians. This veto represents a failure to prioritize human rights and peace, allowing the continued suffering of millions while political considerations take precedence. The people of Sudan deserve immediate action, not diplomatic deadlock.
The humanitarian situation in Sudan is catastrophic. Over 11 million people have been displaced,3 million fleeing to neighbouring countries and more than 25 million are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Widespread violence, human rights abuses, and famine have turned Sudan into the world’s largest displacement crisis. Yet, despite these dire conditions, Russia’s veto prevents the adoption of vital measures that could have alleviated some of the suffering and facilitated the delivery of life-saving aid.
We urge the international community to:
– Pressure Russia to reconsider its position and recognize the gravity of the situation in Sudan.
– Support alternative measures to address the crisis and ensure the protection of civilians.
– Provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the millions of Sudanese people in desperate need of aid and protection.
The protection of civilians is not negotiable. It is a global responsibility, one that transcends political interests. The Sudanese Alliance for Rights calls on all nations to unite in condemning Russia’s veto and to continue working toward an immediate ceasefire in Sudan. We must not allow politics to stand in the way of saving lives. The people of Sudan deserve peace, security, and the immediate cessation of violence.
