STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE AIR STRIKE ON CIVILIANS IN CENTRAL DARFUR

8 February 2025

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights strongly condemns the air strike carried out by the Sudanese Army on Hai Al-Thawra, Zalingei City, Central Darfur State, which has resulted in the tragic loss of civilian lives and destruction of homes. According to initial reports, three civilians have been killed and three others wounded, with significant damage to residential areas.

The deliberate targeting of civilians and residential areas constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law (IHL), including the Geneva Conventions (1949) and their Additional Protocols, which explicitly prohibit indiscriminate attacks and require the protection of civilians during armed conflicts. Furthermore, such actions may amount to war crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which criminalizes attacks intentionally directed against civilians (Article 8).

We call for an immediate cessation of these unlawful attacks and urge all parties to uphold their obligations under international law. The Sudanese Alliance for Rights also calls on the international community, regional bodies, and human rights organizations to take urgent action to hold those responsible accountable and to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches the affected communities.
