Statement by the Sudanese Alliance for Rights on the U.S. Designation of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights takes note of and welcomes the announcement by the U.S. Department of State designating the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) and its stated intention to list the organisation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) effective 16 March 2026.

This decision follows similar measures taken earlier this year. In January 2026, the United States designated the Egyptian, Jordanian, and Lebanese branches of the Muslim Brotherhood under its counter-terrorism sanctions framework. Taken together, these steps signal a broader effort to address networks and entities alleged to be involved in activities that undermine stability, contribute to violence, or threaten civilian populations in the region.

For the Sudanese people who have endured years of political turmoil, armed conflict, and systematic violations of human rights measures aimed at addressing actors associated with violence and destabilisation are of significant importance. Accountability and effective mechanisms to prevent the financing, coordination, or facilitation of violent activities remain critical to protecting civilians and restoring stability.

At the same time, the Sudanese Alliance for Rights emphasises that counter-terrorism measures must be implemented in full compliance with international human rights and humanitarian law. Designation processes should be grounded in transparency, credible evidence, and due process safeguards.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights also takes this opportunity to renew its call to the Sudanese people, political leaders, and all parties to the conflict to prioritise peace, dialogue, and national unity. Sudan has endured immense suffering, and the protection of civilians must remain the foremost priority. Ending violence and pursuing a peaceful and inclusive path forward is essential for the country’s recovery and for the protection of the rights and dignity of all Sudanese citizens.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights calls on the international community to ensure that actions aimed at addressing security threats are accompanied by sustained support for peacebuilding, civilian protection, accountability mechanisms, and the strengthening of democratic institutions in Sudan. Durable peace in Sudan will require not only security measures but also a firm commitment to justice, the rule of law, and respect for the rights and dignity of all Sudanese people.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights remains committed to advancing the protection of human rights, supporting accountability for violations, and promoting a peaceful and rights-respecting future for Sudan.
