Dozens killed, arrested amid growing violations by army and allies in Gezira State

Gezira – SAR

Violations against civilians in the cities and villages of Gezira State have dramatically surged, with the Sudanese army and its allied groups failing to put an end to these abuses.

On Monday, February 3, 2025, after the army took control of the Ambosha area in Gezira state, a group of local mobilizers attacked four young civilians who were on their way to gold mining sites. One of the victims, Tamir, who was beaten and left injured, later recounted the assault.

A video circulating on social media has exposed the severe injuries inflicted on Tamir. In his account, he described how the attackers violently targeted them, leading to one death and the arrest of the others, who were then taken to Al-Managil detention center. Tamir also revealed that they were from Kabkabiya (city in North Darfur), suggesting that the attack was ethnically and regionally motivated.

On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Sudan Shield Forces set fire to Kambo of Dar Al-Salam village.

A statement issued by the Central Committee of the Kanabi Congress, an advocacy group, on January 31, 2025, revealed that government forces and state authorities had encroached on land belonging to Kambo 8 (0) in Al-Kremit (administrative) unit in Al-Managil locality.

Since the Sudanese army and its allies entered Gezira state, they have been repeatedly accused of committing atrocities against civilians, according to reports from human rights organizations and political groups. These violations included killings, with reports confirming the deaths of 13 individuals, including two children, in Kambo Taiba, in Umm Al-Qura locality, east of Gezira state.

Follow-up reports indicate a significant rise in arrests, with several civilians, including women, detained during the attacks. Property was also torched, and homes along with personal belongings were set ablaze in Kambo Taiba, forcing residents to flee.

These assaults are part of ongoing ethnic and regional campaigns targeting specific social groups in Gezira state, with a particular focus on the residents of Al-Kanabi community.

Human rights organizations have strongly condemned these actions, describing them as serious violations of international humanitarian law. The abuses persist under the “Foreign Faces Law”, which has led to the arrest of a large number of unarmed civilians by the army, mobilized forces, and Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigades.

Following the Sudanese army’s recapture of Wad Madani, human rights organizations accused the army and its allied factions of carrying out a massacre in the Kambo (5) area, east of Umm Al-Qura in Gezira state. The accusations were directed specifically at the Sudan Shield Forces and Al-Baraa brigades, both of which are affiliated with the Sudanese Armed Forces.

Reports indicated that these forces specifically targeted ethnic groups of African descent, particularly Al-Kanabi community in Gezira, accusing them of collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces.

Civilians in Wad Madani were killed in brutal ways by Sudanese army soldiers, while the Sudanese army has dismissed the killings as “isolated incidents.”
