Open Letter: Urging Action and Solidarity for Sudan on the Inaugural Day of 2025

Dear President-elect of the United States of America,

As the world turns its attention to the historic inauguration of the President of the United States on 20 January 2025, we extend our heartfelt congratulations on this momentous occasion. Your leadership inspires hope, not only for the American people but for millions worldwide who look to the United States for decisive action on critical global issues.

Today, as we celebrate the ideals of democracy and the peaceful transition of power, we must also confront a shared responsibility to address the devastating humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The suffering of the Sudanese people has reached unimaginable levels, and their plight demands the world’s immediate attention and action.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has claimed over 130,000 lives and displaced millions, leaving entire communities devastated. Civilians are bearing the brunt of this conflict, with widespread hunger, sexual violence, and the destruction of vital infrastructure. More than 25 million people are at risk of famine, and nearly 97% of the population faces severe food insecurity. These are not just statistics—they represent real lives, families torn apart, children without food or shelter, and communities that have lost everything. The people of Sudan are enduring a level of suffering that is almost impossible to fathom, and it is a plight that calls upon the collective humanity of us all.

Mr. President,

your campaign promises of global peace, diplomacy, and a renewed commitment to ending conflicts are a source of hope to millions worldwide. Your words, resonate deeply, especially for those in Sudan who are living through this unimaginable hardship. We know that you believe in the sanctity of human life, and it is this belief that we hope will guide your administration in its response to the crisis in Sudan.

While international efforts have been made to address the suffering in Sudan, the humanitarian response has often been hindered by political paralysis and a lack of sustained commitment. Resolutions and pledges, while appreciated, have not been enough to stop the bloodshed or alleviate the suffering of millions. The humanitarian crisis is deepening every day, and Sudanese lives hang in the balance. Now, more than ever, the world needs decisive action from leaders who understand that compassion and responsibility must take precedence over political barriers.

Mr. President,

this is a crucial moment for your administration to help shape a new way forward for Sudan—one that places humanitarian relief at the forefront and prioritizes peacebuilding efforts. By rallying the international community around a unified strategy, you can help foster efforts that bridge divides and end the cycle of violence. These efforts should focus on engaging the warring parties to reach a comprehensive, inclusive peace agreement. This is not a time for vague promises or distant resolutions. It is a time for meaningful, tangible action. This, coupled with robust humanitarian aid, can provide Sudanese civilians with the lifeline they so desperately need.

The Sudanese people’s suffering reflects our collective failure as a global community to prevent conflict and protect vulnerable populations. Their pain calls us to act with urgency, compassion, and responsibility. It is a stark reminder that human rights are not negotiable, and peace cannot wait. On this day of celebration, let us not forget the millions who are struggling to survive in Sudan, and let us renew our commitment to helping them rebuild their lives and their futures.

Mr. President,

as you take the oath of office, we ask that you be guided by compassion, diplomacy, and a steadfast commitment to fostering dialogue and advancing peaceful solutions in Sudan. May your administration lead the way in rallying global support for Sudan, ensuring that no one is left behind in their darkest hour. Sudan’s future—and the future of its people—depends on the choices we make today. We stand ready to support your efforts and collaborate with all those who are dedicated to peace, justice, and the protection of the most vulnerable.

With hope, empathy, and solidarity,
