Statement by the Sudanese Alliance for Rights on the Atrocities in El Fashir, North Darfur

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights (SAR) condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the horrific atrocities being committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fashir, North Darfur. Based on credible news reports and accounts from eyewitnesses who have since fled the city, following the RSF’s capture of El Fashir after months of siege, its forces have carried out mass killings, house-to-house executions, and attacks on hospitals and civilians.

SAR has been closely following the developments in El Fashir since the escalation on Sunday and remains deeply concerned about the growing violence, the deliberate targeting of civilians, and the obstruction of humanitarian assistance. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of unimaginable horror. The city, now cut off from communication and humanitarian support, has descended into silence and fear.

These actions constitute gross violations of international humanitarian and human rights law and may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. The deliberate targeting of medical facilities, humanitarian workers, and civilians reflects the RSF’s disregard for its obligations under international law.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights therefore calls on the Rapid Support Forces to:

  1. Immediately cease all attacks against civilians and withdraw its troops from El Fashir and surrounding areas;
  2. Respect international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians, medical facilities, and humanitarian actors;
  3. Allow safe humanitarian access and facilitate the evacuation of civilians trapped in conflict zones.

We further call on the African Union, the United Nations, and the international community to:

  • Facilitate immediate mediation between the warring parties to prevent further civilian casualties and end hostilities in El Fashir;
  • Take urgent measures to stop the ongoing atrocities in El Fashir;
  • Support independent investigations into these violations;
  • Hold perpetrators accountable, including those in command positions within the RSF.

The tragedy unfolding in El Fashir underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive civilian protection strategy across Sudan and renewed international pressure to end the cycle of impunity. Civilians must never be the targets of war.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights stands with the people of El Fashir and all victims of violence across Sudan. We will continue to monitor, document, and advocate for justice and accountability for all those whose voices have been silenced by this conflict.
