Statement Condemning Air Strikes in South Khartoum
The Sudanese Alliance for Rights strongly condemns the recent air strikes carried out on Sunday 5 January 2025 in South Khartoum, which resulted in devastating consequences for civilians. The attacks targeted multiple locations, including the emergency department of Al Raqi Hospital, where civilians were being treated, as well as the Al Salamah Area and Ad Hussein Area. These strikes have caused significant harm to innocent civilians, with a reported 24 individuals killed and 57 injured. Disturbingly, 10 of those injured have suffered severe burns, underscoring the brutality of the assault.
Although these areas have been previously targeted, the recent attacks further highlight the indiscriminate nature of the violence and the deliberate targeting of civilian populations. In Ad Hussein Area, a location known for its commercial activity, particularly by women selling goods, the strikes have devastated the livelihoods of many individuals.
The reported figures of deaths and injuries are solely from the Al Salamah and Ad Hussein areas, reinforcing the scale of destruction in these regions.
We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and stand in solidarity with all those affected by this senseless violence. These attacks on civilian infrastructure, including medical facilities, are clear violations of international law, specifically the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit attacks on civilian objects and medical facilities. The indiscriminate nature of these strikes also violates the principles of distinction and proportionality under international humanitarian law.
We call for immediate accountability and demand that all parties involved cease such unlawful actions.
The Sudanese Alliance for Rights urges the international community to take swift and decisive action to ensure justice for the victims and prevent further escalation of violence against civilians. We remain committed to advocating for the protection of human rights and the safety of all Sudanese people.
