Statement Condemning Drone Strikes in El-Deain and Nyala

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights (SAR) strongly condemns the recent drone attacks carried out by the Sudanese Army on government buildings in El-Deain and Nyala in the Darfur region. These targeted strikes on March 14, 15, and 16, 2025, not only threaten civilian infrastructure but also violate fundamental principles of international law.

On Thursday, March 14, 2025, Sudanese army drones targeted the Rural Water Authority building in Nyala, south of the Customs building. On Saturday, March 15, 2025, drones also struck the Al-Daman Hotel in Nyala. On Sunday, March 16, 2025, two drones targeted El-Deain, the capital of East Darfur state—one striking the Health Insurance building on Airport Street and the other hitting the second floor of the Government Secretariat building.

These attacks constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law (IHL) and human rights law, including but not limited to:

  • The Geneva Conventions (1949) and their Additional Protocols, which prohibit attacks on civilian infrastructure and require all parties to distinguish between combatants and civilians.
  • Article 25 of The Hague Regulations (1907), which forbids the targeting of undefended buildings.
  • The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (1998), which classifies deliberate attacks on civilian objects as war crimes under Article 8.
  • UN Security Council Resolutions on Sudan, particularly those concerning the protection of civilians in conflict zones.

While no civilian casualties have been reported, the indiscriminate use of force threatens the safety and stability of the region. SAR calls upon the international community, the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN) to take immediate action to ensure accountability for these violations and prevent further escalation.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Darfur and urge all parties to respect international law, protect civilian lives, and commit to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
