Statement Condemning Recent Airstrikes in Khartoum

We are deeply shocked and outraged by the recent airstrikes in Khartoum that have resulted in devastating civilian casualties. On 7 January 2025, an airstrike targeted the industrial area, tragically claiming the lives of 29 civilians and injuring 25 others, who were rushed to Bashair Hospital. Just a day later, on 8 January 2025, another airstrike struck the South Khartoum area, killing 32 civilians and leaving over 51 injured.

These acts of violence constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law, specifically the Geneva Conventions of 1949, which prohibit indiscriminate attacks and require all parties to a conflict to distinguish between combatants and civilians. The deliberate targeting of civilian areas and infrastructure represents an unacceptable disregard for the principles of distinction and proportionality.

We condemn these attacks in the strongest terms and urge all parties to the conflict to cease hostilities immediately. The continued escalation of violence is intolerable and poses a grave threat to the safety and well-being of innocent civilians.

We call upon the international community to take urgent action to hold those responsible for these atrocities accountable and to press for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Humanitarian access must be ensured to provide critical support to those affected by these heinous acts.

The people of Sudan deserve peace, justice, and dignity. We stand in solidarity with the victims, their families, and all those who continue to suffer in this conflict. It is imperative that steps are taken now to prevent further loss of life and restore hope for a peaceful and secure future for all Sudanese people.
