The Sudanese Alliance for Rights strongly condemns the grave human rights violations committed by a joint military force in Abu Jubayhah City, South Kordofan, on 11 June 2025. According to credible testimonies and local reports, this force — comprising the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Police Forces, the General Intelligence Service, Popular Defense Forces, and mobilized militias — launched a violent operation in the Lagawa neighbourhood. During the raid, armed personnel opened heavy fire into the area, forcibly removed residents from their homes, and subjected them to invasive searches, brutal beatings, and degrading racial and obscene insults. Many of the victims were elderly, and none were involved in the ongoing conflict. Following the violence, the attackers looted large sums of money and valuable possessions, including gold, from nearly every home.
Several civilians were arbitrarily arrested and taken to the headquarters of the 10th Infantry Division in Abu Jubayhah. Among those detained were Al-Haj Joulat Al-Manzoul, Mahmoud Alawi Musa, Osman Al-Nour, Hamtto Yousif, Mohamed Ahmed Kharashi, Mohammed Yousif Saeed, and others. Victims from the neighbourhood confirmed that they were targeted specifically because the army had classified them as supporters of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and because they had refused to participate in fighting alongside the army. All the victims are civilians from the Hawazma and Misseriya tribes, communities that the army allegedly considers aligned with the RSF.
These egregious actions violate both Sudanese national law and international human rights and humanitarian standards. They contravene Sudan’s 2019 Constitutional Declaration, which guarantees the rights to liberty, dignity, and due process. They also breach several international legal instruments to which Sudan is a party, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which prohibits arbitrary detention and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. Additionally, these actions defy the Geneva Conventions, which protect civilians during armed conflict and prohibit acts such as looting, collective punishment, and reprisals against non-combatants. Furthermore, they undermine the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which safeguards the right to life, physical integrity, and equality before the law.
The Sudanese Alliance for Rights urgently calls for an immediate and independent investigation into the atrocities committed in Abu Jubayhah, with the aim of identifying and prosecuting all those responsible for these grave violations. We further demand the unconditional release of all civilians who were arbitrarily detained during the raid. In addition, we urge national and international humanitarian actors to provide immediate support to the affected families, including medical care and psychosocial assistance for survivors of violence and trauma. Finally, we call on the international community to strengthen monitoring and accountability mechanisms to prevent the recurrence of such abuses and ensure the protection of civilians across Sudan.
We stand in unwavering solidarity with the victims and their families and reaffirm our commitment to defending human dignity, justice, and the rule of law in Sudan.
