Statement condemning the Sudanese Army Air Strikes in South Omdurman

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights unequivocally condemns the air strikes carried out by the Sudanese Army on 9 March 2025 in Al Shaqla and Al Salha areas, South Omdurman, near Omdurman Islamic University, Khartoum State. These attacks have resulted in the tragic loss of more than 85 civilians, including women and children, and left many others injured.

We have received deeply disturbing videos from the ground, showing the horrifying reality of these attacks. It is heartbreaking to witness how civilians were deliberately targeted and brutalized by the army. These inhumane actions demonstrate a total disregard for human life and amount to war crimes under international law.

The deliberate and indiscriminate targeting of civilian areas constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law and human rights law. These attacks breach:

  • The Geneva Conventions (1949) and their Additional Protocols, which prohibit attacks against civilians and civilian objects and require distinction between combatants and non-combatants (Articles 48, 51, and 57 of Additional Protocol I).
  • The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which classifies intentional attacks against civilians as war crimes (Article 8(2)(b)(i) & (ii)).
  • The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which guarantees the right to life and security of the person (Article 4).

These heinous acts must not go unpunished. We call for an immediate cessation of hostilities against civilians and urge the international community, the African Union, and the United Nations to take urgent action to hold those responsible accountable. The continued impunity for such crimes only fuels further atrocities and deepens the suffering of the Sudanese people.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights stands in solidarity with the victims and their families and remains steadfast in the pursuit of justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights.
