Date: 30 January 2025
Sudanese Alliance for Rights strongly condemns the horrific atrocities committed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and their allied Islamic groups in Al-Jelly Area, Al-Cadro City, and Al-Durashab in Bahari Locality, Khartoum State, on 28 January 2025. Reports and widely circulated videos reveal the execution of civilians based on ethnicity, acts of torture, and brutal beheadings on the streets. These acts constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The reported atrocities violate multiple provisions of international and regional legal frameworks, including Geneva Conventions (1949) and their Additional Protocols, which prohibit the targeting of civilians, summary executions, and acts of torture in armed conflict; Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), under which extrajudicial killings, ethnic-based executions, and torture constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity (Articles 7 and 8); African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), which upholds the right to life, dignity, and protection from torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment (Articles 4 and 5); and Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which guarantees the right to life, security, and protection from persecution (Articles 3 and 5).
We call for the immediate investigation of these heinous crimes, the prosecution of those responsible, and urgent measures to end the ongoing atrocities. The systematic targeting and execution of civilians must be stopped, and all efforts must be directed toward protecting innocent lives. Justice must prevail, and impunity must not be allowed to take root. The suffering of the Sudanese people cannot be ignored—every action must be taken to restore their dignity, security, and fundamental rights. The world must not turn a blind eye.
