Sudanese Alliance for Rights Decries the Use of Chemical Weapons in Sudan

Date: 20 January 2025

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights strongly condemns the reported use of chemical weapons in Sudan, including mustard gas, phosphorus, and sarin gas, in several regions:

  • Khartoum State: Khartoum city, Omdurman city, and Bahri city.
  • Darfur Region: Al Kuma, Kabkabiya, and Nyala.

Some of these chemical weapons have been deployed during airstrikes, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis. The deliberate targeting of civilians and populated areas with these inhumane weapons has taken the ongoing conflict to an unprecedented level of brutality and devastation.

The use of chemical weapons constitutes a grave violation of international law, including the Chemical Weapons Convention, and represents a blatant disregard for human dignity and life. These weapons inflict indiscriminate harm, causing long-term health consequences, environmental destruction, and immense suffering.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights urgently calls for:

  1. The Sudanese authorities to immediately cease the use of chemical weapons, uphold their international obligations, and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
  2. The international community, including the United Nations, African Union, and relevant human rights organizations, to:
    • Conduct a comprehensive and independent investigation into these allegations.
    • Hold perpetrators accountable under international law.
    • Provide immediate humanitarian assistance to affected regions to alleviate the suffering of civilians.

The use of such weapons has escalated the conflict to alarming levels, with catastrophic consequences for Sudanese civilians. We stand in solidarity with the victims and remain committed to advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights in Sudan.

We call on all stakeholders to work collaboratively to end the violence and restore peace, stability, and dignity to the people of Sudan.

Signed,
Sudanese Alliance for Rights
