Sudanese Alliance for Rights Statement Condemning the Al-Korgol Airstrike

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights (SAR) strongly condemns the horrific airstrike carried out by the Sudanese army on 22 February 2025 in Al-Korgol, Nuba Mountains region, South Kordofan. This ruthless attack claimed the life of a 13-year-old child, destroyed several homes, and reduced a local market to ashes.

According to eyewitnesses, the airstrike, which occurred at 9:00 AM, left the community in devastation, with families mourning an innocent life and struggling to recover from the destruction of their homes and livelihoods. The Al-Korgol area, south of Kadugli, serves as a vital hub for displaced communities and civilians already facing immense hardship due to the ongoing conflict.

This attack not only represents a tragic loss of life but also constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian and human rights law, including:

  1. Violation of the Geneva Conventions: The deliberate targeting of civilian areas violates the Fourth Geneva Convention, which protects civilians in times of conflict.
  2. Breach of the Convention on the Rights of the Child: The killing of a child in armed conflict violates Article 38, which obligates state parties to ensure the protection of children during hostilities.
  3. Contravention of International Humanitarian Law (IHL): Under customary IHL, indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure are strictly prohibited.

We call upon the international community, humanitarian organizations, and relevant bodies to:

  1. Demand accountability: An independent investigation must be conducted to hold those responsible for this heinous act accountable.
  2. Ensure civilian protection: Immediate measures should be taken to prevent further attacks on civilian-populated areas.
  3. Provide humanitarian aid: Urgent relief, including medical supplies, food, and shelter, is needed for the affected families.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights stands in solidarity with the victims and their families and remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice, accountability, and the protection of civilian lives in Sudan.
