The Sudanese Alliance for Rights (SAR) strongly condemns the brutal and indiscriminate airstrike carried out by the Sudanese army on 20 February in Khazan Jadid, Shearia locality, East Darfur State. This senseless attack claimed the lives of 12 innocent civilians, left several others injured, and caused extensive destruction of homes, forcing families into further displacement.
According to reports received by the Sudanese Alliance for Rights (SAR), the heavy aerial bombardment caused widespread devastation, including the destruction of homes and the displacement of many families. Local residents from nearby areas, who spoke to SAR, reported the extreme difficulty of the situation, citing a lack of medical supplies to treat the wounded and the ongoing displacement from the area.
SAR also notes that Khazan Jadid is home to many displaced persons who fled the ongoing conflict in North Darfur State, all of whom are in urgent need of basic services. The situation is further compounded by a communication and internet blackout, including the disruption of Starlink service, which has made it increasingly difficult to document the tragedy and send distress calls for emergency assistance.
We call upon the international community, humanitarian organizations, and all relevant stakeholders to:
- Ensure civilian protection: Immediate measures must be taken to prevent further attacks on civilian areas and displaced communities.
- Facilitate humanitarian aid: Emergency medical supplies, food, and shelter are urgently needed for the affected population.
- Restore communication services: Urgent efforts should be made to restore internet and communication channels to enable effective reporting and coordination of relief efforts.
- Conduct an independent investigation: Those responsible for this grave violation of human rights must be held accountable.
SAR stands in solidarity with the victims and their families and reaffirms its commitment to advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of civilian lives in Sudan.
