Sudanese Alliance for Rights Condemns Grave Violations in Gezira State

06 February 2025

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights strongly condemns the grave human rights violations committed by the Sudanese army and its allied forces in Gezira State, which have led to the deaths, arbitrary arrests, and displacement of civilians. On 3 February 2025, after the army took control of the Ambosha area, a group of local mobilizers attacked four young civilians on their way to gold mining sites. One of them, Tamir, was brutally beaten and left injured, while another was killed, and the remaining two were arrested and taken to Al-Managil detention center. A day later, on 4 February 2025, the Sudan Shield Forces set fire to Kambo of Dar Al-Salam village, destroying homes and forcing residents to flee. Reports indicate that at least 13 civilians, including two children, were killed in Kambo Taiba, in Umm Al-Qura locality, east of Gezira state.

These actions violate fundamental principles of international law, including The Geneva Conventions (1949) and their Additional Protocols, which prohibit attacks on civilians, extrajudicial killings, and the destruction of civilian property. The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (1998) classifies these acts as war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, forced displacement, and persecution based on ethnic identity. Additionally, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) guarantee the right to life, security, and protection from arbitrary detention, all of which have been violated. The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights further protects civilians from persecution, ethnic discrimination, and collective punishment, yet these rights continue to be disregarded.

Following the Sudanese army’s recapture of Wad Madani, human rights organizations accused the Sudan Shield Forces and Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigades, both affiliated with the Sudanese Armed Forces, of committing a massacre in Kambo (5) area, east of Umm Al-Qura in Gezira state. Civilians were brutally killed, and reports indicate that ethnic groups of African descent, particularly Al-Kanabi community members, were specifically targeted and accused of collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces. Furthermore, the enforcement of the “Foreign Faces Law” has resulted in widespread arrests of unarmed civilians by the army and its allied forces.

The Sudanese Armed Forces and all affiliated groups must immediately halt these violations, ensure the protection of civilians, and hold perpetrators accountable. We call on the United Nations, African Union, and international human rights bodies to take urgent action to launch independent investigations, ensure accountability for those responsible, and provide humanitarian assistance to affected communities. The international community must exert diplomatic pressure on Sudanese authorities to cease hostilities and uphold the rights and dignity of all Sudanese people.

The Sudanese people deserve peace, security, and the right to live free from violence and persecution. We will not remain silent in the face of these atrocities.
