Statement on the submission of a Communication to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child on the Situation of Children in Sudan.

On Wednesday, 15 April, 2026, the Sudanese Alliance for Rights submitted a formal communication to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child concerning the widespread, grave, and ongoing violations of children’s rights in Sudan under the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

The submission comes as Sudan marks three years since the outbreak of war, a conflict that has had a devastating and disproportionate impact on children across the country. Millions of children have been killed, injured, displaced, or deprived of access to education, healthcare, and protection services.

Through this communication, the Sudanese Alliance for Rights documents violations, including the recruitment and use of children in armed conflict, indiscriminate attacks affecting civilians, including drone strikes and airstrikes on populated areas, widespread malnutrition and famine conditions, and the rapid spread of disease in areas where health systems have collapsed.

The communication also highlights the particularly difficult humanitarian situation in regions such as Darfur, where children are facing a deadly convergence of conflict, hunger, and disease, including cholera outbreaks and other preventable illnesses.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights acknowledges the important steps already taken by the ACERWC, including its 2023 statement on Sudan and its earlier engagements on the protection of children affected by armed conflict. However, the Alliance expresses concern that a comprehensive, standalone investigation or fact-finding report on the current phase of the conflict and its impact on children has not yet been issued.

This submission calls for urgent action by the Committee, including strengthened monitoring, investigation, and advocacy to ensure accountability and the protection of children’s rights in Sudan. It further urges all parties to the conflict to respect international and regional obligations, including the immediate protection of children and civilian populations.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights reiterates that Sudanese children cannot endure another year of war. Their protection must remain an urgent regional and international priority.

Signed,
Sudanese Alliance for Rights
